The Abbey Theatre was built in 1968 and is owned and run by its members. The theatre has gained a reputation for providing high quality, affordable theatre to the local community and beyond. The project brief commenced with the development of a long term development strategy, into which future development works could be placed.
The first phases of the development plan have been established and so the detailed design will now be developed. The design proposals for the first phase include a new rehearsal room, WCs, stair and lift, and a new covered walkway and terrace connecting the main foyer to the smaller studio theatre.
The proposed scheme seeks to continue the existing architectural forms of clustered simple volumes, while adding a new material and texture with vertical timber cladding.
